Mlondolozi (Lotz) Mahlangeni

Chief Actuary and Chief Risk Officer, Sanlam Limited

Mlondolozi (Lotz) Mahlangeni is a Qualified Actuary and Certified GARP FRM with over 18 years’ professional experience in the reinsurance, insurance and investment banking sectors of the financial services industry.

Lotz is a seasoned business leader, an experienced actuary and a treasury and balance sheet management expert with diverse and multi-disciplinary experience and expertise across various industries, sectors and fields including integrated financial services; balance sheet management across all financial resources and financial risk management fields; investment banking; capital markets; structured finance; and insurance, investments and reinsurance industries.

Lotz is currently the Chief Actuary and Chief Risk Officer of Sanlam Limited. He joined Sanlam in September 2020 and is responsible for Group Actuarial and Risk Management, Group Capital and Balance Sheet Management, Group Legal and Compliance and Group Prudential Regulatory Engagement.

Prior to joining Sanlam Limited, Lotz spent a year and a half as Bank Treasurer: FirstRand Bank Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of JSE-listed FirstRand Limited. Lotz joined FirstRand in March 2019 where heled and managed a function responsible for Funding and Liquidity Management, Intraday Liquidity Management, Treasury Risk Transformation and Clearing Unit & Asset Liability Management Analytics, Operations and Information Technology, Currency & Exchanges (including Exchange Control) and Settlement and Swift.

Prior to joining FirstRand Limited, Lotz spent nine years of his career at JSE-listed Momentum Metropolitan Holdings (formerly MMI Holdings) in various roles of progressive seniority – his last role was Head: Group Treasury and Group Balance Sheet Management division reporting to the Group Finance Director. His division was responsible for group-wide financial resources management (capital, funding and liquidity resources) as well as the management of the balance sheet financial market risk exposures (market, credit and liquidity risks). He was responsible for leading and managing a high-performance and multi-disciplinary team of experts that manage complex business, financial and risk management matters.

Lotz joined MMI Holdings in February 2010 as a Senior Asset Liability Management and Market Risk Analyst and after his initial appointment, he played numerous roles, of progressive strategic impact, leadership seniority and broader responsibilities in the MMI strategic finance and risk management functions. He was appointed the Head of MMI Group Balance Sheet Management in October 2014. He was then appointed as Head of MMI Group Treasury and Balance Sheet Management (previous role plus Group Treasury & Funding and Liquidity Management) in February 2014. In June 2017 the MMI Group Treasury and Balance Sheet Management function was expanded to include Group Performance Management (interim structure) as well as Group Balance sheet structuring and optimization. From February 2018, Lotz headed up MMI’s (Integrated) Group Treasury and Balance Sheet Management division that also included Shareholder-backed Capital and Liability Driven Investments and Asset Origination as well as Specialized Legal and Structuring.

Prior to joining MMI Holdings, Lotz spent three years in the life reinsurance industry (2002-2004) and five years in the investment banking industry (2005-2009).

Lotz holds an Honours Degree in Business Science, with distinction in Statistics, from the University of Cape Town. He obtained his Actuarial qualification in 2005. He is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (UK) and a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa. He was one of the first Black Actuaries to qualify in South Africa in 2005. He has a track record in leadership and management positions, particularly in leading specialist multidisciplinary teams of experts in delivering complex initiatives.
